For the exams (June 2026, September 2026), you need to familiarize yourselves with the power point material (concepts, arguments, examples). In the written exams, you will have two questions, and you should answer one of them. People not having attended the class and participated in the sessions and the presentation won't have the choice of submitting essays; they have only the option of the written exams.
This undergraduate course provides a comprehensive examination of forced migration, with particular emphasis on understanding its various forms, causes, and classifications. Students will explore the conceptual and legal distinctions between refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons (IDPs), stateless individuals, disaster-displaced populations, development-induced displacement, and climate-related migration. The course critically analyzes how and why people are compelled to move, distinguishing forced migration from voluntary migration while recognizing the complexity and continuum between them.
The course introduces the theoretical frameworks used to interpret displacement, including political, economic, environmental, and social drivers. Students will examine international legal instruments, protection regimes, and institutional responses that shape the governance of displacement during humanitarian emergencies. Special attention is given to the challenges of categorization, protection gaps, and the evolving nature of displacement in a changing global context.
Through lectures, guided discussions, and analytical assignments, students will develop a clear conceptual foundation and the ability to differentiate among types of forced migration. By the end of the course, students will be able to critically assess displacement dynamics and evaluate humanitarian and policy responses within broader global systems.
