Political Thought, Freedom and Democracy

(UNI197) -  ΣΠΥΡΙΔΩΝ ΜΑΚΡΗΣ

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

This is an Erasmus elective course which is taught in English and in which we thoroughly explore the ontological and metaphysical aspects of 'the political' with special emphasis on the concepts of freedom and democracy. More specifically, in this semester's course, we profoundly scrutinize Jean Baudrillard's social and political onto-theology. Jean Baudrillard is an eminent French thinker that is well-known for his radical interpretations about virtual reality, mass media, digital technology, international terrorism, globalization, world power, masses and the like. He provides us with a very insightful terminology as well as epistemology and methodology in order to 'unlock', so to speak, the invisible sites and sides of contemporary society and politics. Actually, the course is a constructive combination of lectures and group readings on Jean Baudrillard's social and political theory, directing our theoretical focus on his radical social and political onto-theology, especially on how he perceives the onto-theological concepts and/or categories of Good and Evil, reality and hyperreality, subject and object and so on and so forth. Bear in mind that since you like it, you have the opportunity to write a response paper concerning a specific work of him and then to present it before the class. In the section of Documents (see Menu), you can find plenty of Baudrillard's books in the form of PDF as well as some introductory papers of mine regarding his social and political thought. Also take a look at the Syllabus of the course, where you can see the titles of the individual lectures as well as the basic outline of the whole project. I wish you all the very best of luck for your academic challenges. Take care of yourselves. I remain at your disposal.
