Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

The course focuses on bibliography research skills, engaging students in extensive reading on socioeconomic concepts. Choosing a suitable topic, doing keyword search, evaluating sources for readability and reliability, understanding scientific paradigms, condensing argumentation, juxtaposing sources. The coursework engages students in research writing and reflection on socioeconomic concepts.

Requirements:

1- A good, current B2+ level of English.

2- Attendance of the lessons of the first 3 weeks of the term or a grade of 16/20 onthe research writing theory test at

Προϋπόθεση συμμετοχής στις προόδους:

1- επίπεδο Αγγλικών που να επιτρέπει την επεξεργασία επιστημονικών κειμένων (το ελάχιστο Β2 πρόσφατο) ή βαθμός άνω του 8 στα Αγγλικά ΙΙΙ και IV του τμήματος.

2- γνώση της θεωρίας του μαθήματος που καλύπτεται τις πρώτες 3 εβδομάδες, είτε με παρακολούθηση, ή με συμπλήρωση του κουίζ θεωρίας ερευνητικής διαδικασίας στον παρακάτω σύνδεσμο.

Continuous assessment as of 2025-2026 (next year) and onwards:

3 assignments on 3 units of the book. Each assignment will contain 3 parts:

a) a screenshot of a keyword search on Google Scholar on the topic.

b) selection and summary (about 300 words) of one of the research papers found on the topc

c) reflection on the content/ ideas expressed in the research paper and comparison with those in the chapter of the coursebook.

Evaluation

The course is assessed by continuous assessment, with 3 assignments.

Assignmnent 1- Demonstrating research awareness: Selection + Justification of topic in 150 words.

For a hypothetical research paper, compose 2 paragraphs specifying

(a) how you get from a research area to a topic and

(b) justify your choice of topic.

(c) Insert a screenshot of a keyword search you conducted and comment on one of the results: Is it relevant/ suitable to your topic?

Assignment 2- CONDENSING ARGUMENT & REFLECTING on a SOURCE -

Choose one of the textbook's topics listed below, find a related journal article (a 10-page academic paper or chapter in a book) and

a) mention the keyword search you followed and why you chose the particular text

b) present its main argumentation in 350 words.

c) discuss how it connects to the text of the unit (in about 150 words). Compare opinion expressed, research paradigm.

FORMAT: .doc (or Google Doc link) submitted on eclass Nov 28.

Assignment 3-

Το μάθημα αξιολογείται με διαδικασία προόδων. Η βαθμολογία της 3ης προόδου είναι πιο επιεικής από την βαθμολογία της 4ης που θα είναι πιο αντικειμενική, καθώς μετά την 3η πρόοδο ακολουθούν 2 συναντήσεις ατομικές στις οποίες επισημαίνονται οι αποκλίσεις από το προσδοκώμενο αποτέλεσμα.

Για όσους/ όσες χρωστούν το μάθημα από παλαιότερα έτη, η δομή του διαγωνίσματος είναι ως εξής (βαθμοί 20):

- When doing research, what types of sources are considered appropriate (name them)? Τι είδη πηγών θεωρούνται ακαδημαϊκές;

- identify the APA citation from a set of 3. Από επιλογή 3 παραπομπών διαλέξτε τη μορφή APA.

- Google Scholar question. Ερώτηση σχετική με τις πληροφορίες που αντλούμε από τον Google Scholar.

- Evaluate an abstract for relevance to a specific topic. Αξιολογήστε ένα abstract ως προς το αν είναι σχετικό με το θέμα που σας δίνεται.

- rephrase a short paragraph. Επαναδιατυπώστε το κείμενο.

- Recognise the research paradigm (100-150 words). Με βάση πίνακα όπου αντιπαρατίθενται επιστημονικές αντιλήψεις/ σχολές, αναγνωρίστε την τοποθέτηση του κειμένου.

- A question on one of the book units 16, 17, 21, 25.
