Lecture structure: weeks 1-5: research writing theory
- selecting and narrowing down a topic/ researching the topic on Google Scholar/ using the Scholar findings to reshape the topic
- evaluating sources for readability/ reliability/ research paradigm/ methodology/ originality
- in-text citations and rephrasing from sources to avoid plagiarism
- the structure of the research paper: the introduction, the literature review, the conclusion
- academic language
The remaining weeks will consist of writing chapters followed by one-on-one consultations on Google Meet.
Every week one day will be dedicated to class time and the other to individual consultations. Class time can concern the following:
- Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them (Remedial Workshop)
- Go over frequent errors you’ve noticed in their drafts (e.g., weak thesis statements, poor citation practices, unclear structure).
- Provide before-and-after examples from anonymized student work (with permission).
- Include a peer-editing exercise where students correct sample paragraphs.
- Data Presentation & Analysis for Economics Papers
- How to describe tables, graphs, and statistical results clearly.
- Common pitfalls in interpreting data (e.g., correlation vs. causation).
- Practice: Have students analyze a poorly presented dataset and improve it.
- Strong Introductions & Conclusions
- What makes a good Economics research intro (context, research gap, thesis)?
- How to write a conclusion that summarizes without repetition.
- Workshop: Students rewrite their own intro/conclusion in class.
- Academic Style & Formal Writing for Economics (we have covered this but may return if issues appear)
- Avoiding informal language, wordiness, or vague phrasing.
- Using hedging (e.g., "may suggest" instead of "proves") and strong verbs.
- Activity: Reword informal/weak sentences from their drafts.
- Literature Review & Synthesis (we have covered this under ‘finding your own authorial voice’ but, again, we may revisit)
- How to group sources by theme (not just summarize one by one).
- Using signposting ("Similarly, Smith (2020) argues… but Jones (2021) counters…").
- Workshop: Students outline their literature review structure.
- Time Management & Self-Editing Strategies
- Breaking down the remaining work into small tasks.
- Self-editing checklist (e.g., "Does each paragraph support the thesis?").
- Peer feedback session (swap drafts for 10-minute reviews).
The research comprises the following stages for the spring term 2025:
- Rationale + 5 sources (11 March):
In 200 words describe the topic you wish to work on, what you already know about it, how you intend to approach it, why you chose it. - Outline: Headings (19 March)
- any one chapter X (eg. literature review) 350-500 words (9 April)
- consultations on the paper progress 350-500 words (19 March-21 May)
- full paper 2000wds/person (max.), or 2500/pair (30 May)
