Starting January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT® test will be updated. 

The TOEFL iBT exam changes are designed to better reflect modern academic environments and relatable situations students are more likely to encounter. These changes are hugely seen in the new test format per section.

Updated TOEFL Reading Task Types

In the new format, there are now three reading task types with shorter prompts derived from relatable student experiences.

Updated TOEFL Listening Task Types

The new TOEFL listening section will now feature four diverse task types that revolve around both academic and daily life situations.

Listen and Choose a Response

Listen to a Conversation

Listen to an Announcement

Listen to an Academic Talk

Updated TOEFL Writing Task Types

The updated Writing section focuses on clear, relevant, and practical writing skills. Students will complete three task types in about 12 minutes.

Build a Sentence

Write an Email

Write for an Academic Discussion

Updated TOEFL Speaking Task Types

The Speaking section in the updated TOEFL exam will now require students to complete just two task types: repeating prompts and taking an interview that focuses on natural conversation flow.
