CLIMATE CHANGE LAW AND POLICIES

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

The course studies the formation and evolution of the institutional framework for addressing the adverse impact of climate change at national, European, and international level. Students will become familiar with the scope of policies and rules adopted for the protection of the environment, as well as the governance and management of climate change. Due climate change, persons, communities, vulnerable groups, states, and geographic regions are affected in a very different and negative manner.

The course is structured in order to examine all aspects of the adverse impact of climate change and to critically examine the existing regulatory and policy framework on the mitigation of the adverse consequences of climate change.

The course is taught over 13 lectures:

  1. Principles of International Environmental Law
  2. Diplomacy and Stakeholders – The need for coordination of all stakeholders
  3. International Instruments and Conventions addressing the adverse consequences of climate change
  4. International Instruments and Conventions addressing the adverse consequences of climate change
  5. Human Rights and Climate Change: Legal Framework and Rights’ Holders
  6. Human Rights and Climate Change: Jurisprudence at National and International Level
  7. Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change
  8. Island States, Vulnerable States, and Climate Change
  9. Climate Change and the Law of the Sea – Exploitation of Natural Resources and Deep Seabed Mining
  10. Climate Change as a Global Threat and Its Connection to Other Threats – Sustainable Development Goals & the Global Biodiversity Framework
  11. The EU Framework on Climate Change – Disaster Management
  12. EU Policies on Climate Change and the EU Emissions Trading System

Implementation of International Obligations at National Level – Comparative Study of National Legal Measures and the National Climate Law of Greece and other EU member states. Discussion of the impact of climate change on other sectors such as shipping, transport, energy, and agriculture
