Turkey: Society, Economy and the Political System
(Δ28007) - Professor Spyridon N. Litsas
Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
Turkey is one of the main regional actors in the Eastern Mediterranean today, with a wide range of political, strategic, and economic activities influencing the region and its people. The course will focus on the rich pre-Turkish history during the 19th century of the Ottoman period, the formation of the Turkish state and the central ideological ingredients of the Kemalist ideology, the domestic political and economic turbulences that penetrated the Turkish framework during the Cold War era, as well as the re-emergence of political Islam at the center of the nation’s political developments. The analysis of Turkish Foreign policy will also be another primary concern of this course, exploring the principal strategic doctrines and the various diplomatic methodologies implemented during the Kemalist era and today.
The course will run under the main Liberal Arts educational philosophy, giving the time and space to every student to participate in the meetings and equally contribute to the evolution of the academic sessions.
Each student has to produce a final essay of 6.000 words (excluding footnotes, references, and bibliography) at the end of the course from a list of titles that will be given in due course.
