This practice-based course focuses on the epistemological, theoretical, methodological, and ethical issues of applying ethnographic research. As the method of sociocultural anthropology, ethnography, combined with digital technologies, is a valuable research approach for studying societies and groups undergoing political and humanitarian interventions while subjected to various forms of crisis. Ethnographic research is a qualitative methodology that employs a bottom-up perspective and blends the critical analysis of the dominant discourses with the experiences and perceptions of social subjects.

The course will provide basic outlines on epistemological, methodological and practical matters about ethnographic research and develop an understanding of the relationship between methodological practice, data analysis and the writing of ethnography. More concretely, it will train students in data collection techniques such as participatory observation, interviews, life stories, storytelling, the documentation of actions and practices in public and private space, analysis of the dominant discourses, and the embodied action against hegemonic institutional policies.

The course will encourage an appreciation of the problems of anthropological fieldwork and address issues such as access to the field, norms and conventions in applying research techniques in particular cultural contexts, the processual nature of fieldwork, ethical concerns, and the personal and emotional commitment of the researcher. The inclusion of contemporary digital technologies in the methodological tools of ethnographic research (such as digital storytelling, internet and social media, the exploration of the use of digital media, and the parallel lives of real and virtual reality) are seen as ways to multiply and strengthen the research planning and data analysis processes on issues of humanitarian crises and interventions.
