Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
Text Analysis in Academic English has been written to help students of economic sciences in an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course develop discipline specific skills that will enable them to communicate more effectively in the specialist field of their studies. To this end the coursebook provides a systematic analysis of the typical verbal (e.g. newspaper articles, extracts from economics textbooks, internet economics texts, academic papers) and visual (diagrams, graphs, charts, tables) genres (types of texts) students encounter in the field of their studies.
The coursebook contains 8 units. Texts from different verbal genres are analysed to highlight the characteristic features of the economics text (nominalisation, hedging, particular tense and voice use, quoting from an original source, etc.). Economic terms that appear in the texts are defined and exercises on the most important economic principles are provided. The structure/organisation of the texts is also elucidated through the identification of lexical, grammatical and textual cohesive ties that keep the texts tightly knit. Since such texts are usually of extensive length, students are encouraged to use the appropriate reading strategies that can increase their understanding of a text in a more effective way. Units 1 and 2 present several different techniques students can resort to every time they approach lengthy reading passages. These reading strategies are further practised in the rest of the course.
In addition, as particular types of texts do not remain monomodal but they are often accompanied by some sort of visual presentation (e.g. layout techniques, visual displays, images, etc.) a number of examples from the visual genres of economics representation (diagrams, graphs, charts and tables) are examined. Their description provides a deeper insight into the schematic, condensed yet clear way such genres use to represent economic relations and data.
The analysis of different genres in this coursebook, then, aims to enhance understanding of the way meaning is made in the field of economics and thus help students become more competent in their discipline by developing the appropriate academic skills.
