This course examines key themes in urban ethnography and the relationship between cities and globalization, with particular attention to Eurasia and the Global South. It explores how capitalism including:  markets, informal economies, and port cities, transnational networks, migration and contemporary challenges such as climate change, resilience, and smart urbanism shape urban life.The course analyzes how urban residents navigate and transform globalizing cities through everyday practices, creative networks (festivals, museums, artistic mobility), and social movements related to environmental justice, migration, refugee solidarity, and LGBTQ+ rights. Special attention is given to cinema and visual culturee.g. digtials torytelling, as powerful forces shaping urban imaginaries. In addition, the course develops practical digital skills in urban research communication (shooting, photography, sound editing). The skills developed are documented with a written certificate at the end of the course upon the successful completion of the exams.

 

The course is divided into two hours of lab practice and two hours of seminars each week.

Assessment: Students will produce short videos or storytelling digital essays, visual maps or podcasts to document, analyze, and critically interpret urban experiences, gaining hands-on experience in digital storytelling, audiovisual ethnography, and public-facing scholarship. All digital productions, which are compulsory for all, will be orally presented before the end of the semester (before Christmas).

Upon submission, and if the quality of their digital production is not good, students might be asked to also give oral exams on specific material from the class bibliography with mutual agreement between the instructor and student.
