CA reminder: instructions for oral presentations

On Tuesday 26/5 we are going to have the CA oral presentations. The final exam students do not have to attend but they are more than welcome to do so to support their fellow classmates.

Instructions for oral presentation structure:

1. Introduction (introduction of names, introduction of topic, importance of topic, attention grabber, and optionally a short preview of main points)

2. Presentation of one side of the issue under discussion

3. Presentation of another side of the issue under discussion

4. Personal opinion

(2, 3 and 4 need to be approximately equal in development)

5. Short conclusion (some ideas: positive thinking, call for action, quote, rhetorical question, poem extract)

6. References

Instructions for PPT

1. Show the introductory attention grabber in one slide

2. In all slides, use bullet points and PHRASES NOT LONG SENTENCES or paragraphs

3. Use little information on the slides and expand them orally

4. You can use pictures and colors but do not overdo it.

5. Use one slide for your conclusion

6. Avoid fancy transitions because they may not work on our smart screen.

Instructions for oral language

1. PLEASE use simple language (i.e. simple vocabulary NOT the vocabulary of your sources)

2. Use oral language i.e. you can use phrases, you can repeat the same expressions/vocabulary for emphasis, and you can use parallel structure and oral expressions

3. Use SHORT simple sentences (do NOT simply use the same sentences of your sources or those of the extended abstract. SIMPLIFY THEM)

4. Use friendly language

5. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse, and time it well.

Bring the PPT file on a USB stick to class.

Final exam format

Questions on the comprehension and the speech techniques of a given speech (5 items, 10 pts)
Questions on the theory of oral presentations & doing research, and the core ideas of speeches taught (6 items, 12 pts)
Vocabulary matching exercise (15 items, 15 pts)
Exercise on derivatives (13 items, 13 pts)

To prepare for the vocabulary exercises, you need to study the terminology from the speeches below. If the speech is in the book, you should study the vocabulary from the vocabulary lists and exercises of the book. If the speech is not in the book, you should study the vocabulary from the vocabulary exercises in the relevant PPT file on eclass.

Availability of course book

This announcement concerns those of you who have NOT got the coursebook yet. The publisher notified me that the book will be available again from tomorrow Friday, 8 May. It is very important that you get the book, as it will be better and easier for you to study the vocabulary (both CA and final exam students) from the vocabulary lists at the end of every speech in the book. The vocabulary of the remaining speeches (the ones that are not in the book) can be studied from the vocabulary exercises in the relevant PPT files uploaded on eclass.

Final exam students should also study the theory on public speaking from the book units.

So, if you do not yet have the book, get it from Anikoula bookstore.

The title is Public speaking for university students: principles & practice, 2015

More detailed information about the final exam will be given in our lesson on Tuesday, 12/5.

Announcement about vocabulary quiz and final exam preparation

On Tuesday 12 May we are going to have two separate sessions for the CA AND final exam students:

3:00-4:30 CA Terminology quiz

4:30-5:30 Final exam preparation

If you are taking the quiz, come at 3:00. Only students who have already completed all the previous CA assignments can take the quiz (i. e., oral presentation and submission of short abstract and rationale & submission of extended abstract).

If you are taking the final exam, come at 4:30.

Terminology quiz format:

Match the words with their definitions (15 items)
Complete the blanks with the words given (15 items)
Put the words in the right derivative form (10 items)

This is to let you know that 1) in our next lesson (Tuesday, 31 March), we will talk about the use of AI in research writing and the use of Turnitin in detecting AI language and language similar to that of other sources and how we can use it.

2) The deadline for submission of extended abstracts (by uploading them on Turnitin) is extended to Wednesday, 15 April ( a day during your Easter vacation)

CA students should upload their short abstract and rationale in a doc or docx file (NOT pdf) in the eclass assignment "Short abstract and rationale" by 24:00 Wednesday 18th March.

All presenters should also be present in Wednesday's lesson to present their abstracts and rationales orally. Pairs have 2 minutes, individuals have 1,5 minute and groups of three have 2,5 minutes. Everybody should be in class at 15:00 and no later than that. I will make no exceptions and allow for no extension.

Please make sure you do these on time.
